Environmental Assessments, Environmental Inventories, Terrain Screening

Heartland Design has experience with preparing environmental assessments and terrain screening for planning updates, design guidelines and environmental protection policies. Heartland was responsible for the environmental inventory and the formulation of environmental policies with regard to the Provincial Wetland Policy for the Bell Creek Secondary Plan and Stanley Creek Secondary Plans in Belleville; the South of Division Road Secondary Plan in Severn Township; the East Environs Environmental Screening for the City of Belleville, and the Annexed Lands Secondary Plan for the City of Orillia. Currently Heartland Design is working with an engineering client on the environmental assessment of two properties involved in securing extensions to their gravel pit licenses. Heartland will prepare a Natural Environment Report that would determine the presence of significant natural heritage features or fish and wildlife habitat, and to ensure that necessary preventative, and remedial measures are in place for their protection.

Shoreline Restoration, Storm Water Planning, Waterfront Permit Applications

Heartland’s experience with diverse environmental issues has resulted in positive outcomes for many homeowners who live along lake shorelines and beaches. We have an excellent working relationship with many Conservation Authorities in the area and our ideas have resulted in some very successful shoreline restorations.

Heartland has past experience with storm water planning, including the design of a rehabilitation strategy for Belleville Marsh. The Stirling Wetland complex which included details for an innovative bio-engineering program and specialized planning and naturalization strategies for these storm water facilities.

Heartland Design has been involved in a number of successful waterfront permit applications through Quinte Conservation Authority, Lower Trent Conservation Authority, Ministry of Natural Resources and Parks Canada. We have also done a number of successful residential shoreline restorations that included naturalization strategies.

Bell Creek Secondary Plan

Working with a consortium of planners and engineers, Heartland Design was responsible for the landscape inventory and analysis for this area of newly annexed land within the City of Belleville. Heartland provided vital input for the identification of suitable transportation and service corridors, zones suitable for residential development, parkland dedication and environmental protection areas.  Environmental policies were developed and an Environmental Impact Statement was prepared to document how the Plan respected the Provincial Wetland Policy.

City of Orillia Secondary Plan

Heartland Design was responsible for assembling an extensive environmental overview for approximately 1400 acres of land just west of the former City limits. A biosphere inventory and analysis was carried out for this ecologically complex site, leading to the development of policies and strategies formulated to minimize and mitigate negative impacts from future development. A conceptual open space system was devised to create a central network of open space linking the proposed new community centre and park with Orillia’s waterfront.  This secondary plan was completed and adopted as part of the Official Plan. The natural corridors and connections identified and protected within the Open Space Concept are gradually being brought into recreational use as adjacent neigbourhoods develop.
